If the south feels too busy, Balangan is a happy medium: cliffs behind, sand underfoot and a handful of warungs for a drink or a meal with your feet in the sand. In the late afternoon it fills with surfers and people watching the sunset, but without the crush of other places. At low tide the rocks show and swimming gets less comfortable, so check the tide before you go. It sits a little apart from the Pecatu beaches, a short scooter ride away. Good for an afternoon of surf-watching and a relaxed dinner.
