A sea temple on a 70-metre cliff: clifftop walk, cheeky macaques and a Kecak fire dance at sunset.
Pura Luhur Uluwatu is a Balinese Hindu sea temple built on the edge of a 70-metre cliff at the south-western tip of the Bukit Peninsula. It is one of Bali's nine directional temples and the only sea temple that also belongs to that group. A paved walkway runs along the clifftop past carved split gates, Ganesha statues and padmasana shrines, with the Indian Ocean below. Long-tailed macaques live here and snatch sunglasses, phones and flip-flops, so keep bags closed and don't feed them. Arrive an hour before sunset, wear a sarong and sash, and stay for the Kecak dance at 6pm on the cliff-side stage. Allow about 90 minutes.
