Going to Ubud? See who'll be around

Main temple inside Ubud's Monkey Forest, on the highest ground, flanked by carved Rangda figures — go early.
Pura Dalem Agung Padangtegal stands on the highest ground of the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, in the south-west of the grounds, and is the main temple of the three that form the complex. It honours Shiva as the transformer, and the local community still uses it for worship. The stairway is flanked by carved Rangda figures with jutting fangs, hanging breasts and long tongues. Because it sits inside the sanctuary, you pay the Monkey Forest entrance and walk there among crab-eating macaques — the ground in front of the temple is one troop's home territory. Arrive early, before the tour groups, and allow about half an hour. Wear a sarong and sash; they are usually lent at the entrance.
