Amlapura's royal palace: a quiet stop for architecture and courtyards, with no tour groups.
This is the palace of Karangasem's former royal family, right in the middle of Amlapura, and it's a visit you can take slowly because it's rarely busy. The charm is in the courtyards, the carved gateways and the mix of Balinese and European styles. Go in the morning and allow about forty-five minutes. Wear something that covers shoulders and knees, and don't count on much information on site, so arriving with a bit of reading helps. It pairs well with Tirtagangga and Ujung, a short scooter ride away. Good for architecture fans and anyone wanting an easy, calm stop in the east.
