Going to Ubud? See who'll be around

Plan your trip and we'll show you travellers on your dates. Only if you both want.

Ubud's water palace: a lotus pond, frangipani trees and stone carvings by I Gusti Nyoman Lempad, right in the centre of town.

Pura Taman Saraswati is the Ubud Water Palace, a Balinese Hindu temple dedicated to Sarasvati, the goddess of learning, literature and art. Designed by the sculptor and architect I Gusti Nyoman Lempad, it was finished in 1952. What you see first is the lotus pond: a straight walkway crosses it, lined with plumeria trees and paras-stone statues of mythological figures, most of them Lempad's work. Three red-brick kori agung gates lead into the inner courtyard. It sits on Jalan Raya Ubud, a short walk from the palace and the market, so it fits easily into a morning. Half an hour is enough; come early to have the pond to yourself. Dress modestly, as in any Balinese temple.
